CHAPTER 18

The spot ended up being the Control Room, as Victoria called it. All the windows were pretty much intact and it kept them out of the salty elements. The only thing Bracken didn’t like happened to be the area was too small to fit with the mech. He had to leave it outside in order to join the group. He thought about just sleeping in the mech, but he needed to also talk to his team.

They were all hurting after Mike’s death. They needed to talk. And they needed a plan. For now, Victoria, John and Clint would have to be left out. Ramses, as she sat alone at a dust covered desk, needed to remain in the dark about everything. Murdock put her in charge, but the woman was just as crazy as the oil tycoon. She was Murdock’s assurance everything went as planned. And now that things weren’t going to plan…Bracken had a feeling shit was going to get uglier in a hurry.

“So what are we gonna do, man?” Seth asked. They were well out of earshot from Ramses all the way across the large room.

“Just like Lad said.” Bracken gave the boy a small smile. Lad smiled back warily. “We get in the raft and find land.”

“What about the mechs?” Natalie asked.

“Yeah,” Cera said. “A couple of us could propel alongside. Might be good to have them, you know?”

Bracken nodded. “Agreed. Myself, Seth and Cera will take the mechs.”

“And Victoria, John and Clint?” Seth asked.

And that’s when Bracken noticed Clint staring directly at them. The man was about the same distance away as Ramses, but Bracken could almost swear he heard them.

He sighed. “I don’t know, what do you guys think?”

“I think we should bring them too,” Natalie said. “I mean, they’re in the same trouble we are.”

“So is Ramses,” Bracken pointed out.

Natalie sneered. “I hate her.”

“But she hasn’t hurt any of us,” Lad said.

“Not yet,” Bracken said. “She’s about to snap. Just looking at her tells me that much. And if you don’t believe me, watch her for a while. She’s unhinging.”

“So, what…we’re just going to leave her here?” Seth adjusted himself on the hard floor, frowned, sighed. “I mean, I get she’s going bonkers, man, but she’s also a victim here.”

Bracken shook his head. “Not so much a victim. She has a gun. She’s here to enforce things, and kill, if necessary. She was hired as a form of assurance.”

“Hey,” Cera said, smiling. “I’m good with leaving her ass here.”

“We’ll see,” Bracken said. He hated being on the fence about it. Yes, Ramses was losing her mind, or revealing her true colors, or whatever. But she was also human. She was stuck in the mess too. Leaving her would be a form of murder. And murder wasn’t in Bracken’s job description.

Everyone sat in silence for a few minutes, then Lad sighed. “I miss Mike.”

They all nodded. Mike had been a part of the team since the beginning and when Lad joined a couple years ago, the two men bonded instantly.
